Bethany specializes in engagement and outreach, with a background supporting equity-centered community planning projects. While her education is in Civil Engineering, her focus has always been on the intersection of public engagement and large-scale infrastructure projects.

Prior to joining BERK, Bethany was an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Washington Evans School. She guided discussions on equity and human rights as it related to engineering; led a DEI Curriculum Task Force, and supported student research projects while teaching. Bethany has a PhD in Behavioral Science for Sustainable Systems  and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Virginia. She brings additional experience in science communication, data analysis, and ESG reporting. Bethany volunteers with the Saint Marks Affordable Housing Committee.

Outside BERK

Bethany (Lumbee – NC) moved to Seattle from Virginia in 2022 and has loved putting down roots here with her husband, Alex.  A self-described vegetable enthusiast, you'll often find her combing through cookbooks at her local bookstore or library in search of new plant-forward recipes. She also enjoys knitting, running, and playing with puppies at Resilient Hearts Animal Sanctuary. When she’s not in Seattle, she’s likely in search of a snack in a different country — Bethany has traveled to 33+ countries and would love to know where there's a locally-relevant bread she can try.
